Salomon (Monne) Rodrigues de Miranda

grows up in the poverty-stricken family of an Amsterdam diamond cutter. He worked his way up through self-education.

As a social-democratic alderman, he commissioned many work projects, including the Amsterdam Forest (wood) and a number of swimming pools.

In July 1942, he and many other Jews were arrested and taken to Camp Amersfoort. Here Monne died after ten days from the effects of severe beatings inflicted by a Dutch block elder, aged 67.
