Emily Dickinson

(installation in two parts)

Of the American Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), 1775 poems are known. They are varied in form and content: light, serious, with humor and often with the garden as their subject. Because of a chronic illness, from the age of 30 she led a reclusive existence in her family's home. With my installation I try to let the visitor experience her silent white world.

The Soul unto itself

Is an imperial friend -

Or the most agonizing Spy -

An Enemy - could send -

Emily Dickinson

Location of this installation is the basement of Huis Kernhem (1803) in Ede.

Reflection

Emily Dickinson surrounded herself with strong-smelling flowers to mask her unpleasant body odour caused by chronic kidney disease. 'Father's house and my garden, that's my world,' she wrote.

All around the pond are fragrant lilies. At the bottom of the pond is her portrait, applied on an oval mirror. Looking into this, your face mingles with Emily's.

Location of this installation is the hall of Huis Kernhem.
